Goodbye Pappy

It was a long time ago (sometime in the fall of 1999) when I first met The Wife’s grandparents. We hadn’t been dating real long at the time, but I already knew how much she loved her Nana and Pappy and (as someone who loved his grandparents) that made me feel good. I don’t remember why Nana and Pappy were in Rock Hill (I feel like they were driving back from somewhere and decided to stop by Rock Hill to meet me). We went to Shoney’s (perhaps the last time I’ve eaten at a Shoney’s) and it was great. Sure, I was nervous, but both Nana and Pappy were very kind to me from the beginning. Maybe it was because they knew how much The Wife loved me… or maybe it was because they were sooooo happy that she was able to land a guy like me even though she had a tattoo. Whatever the reason, I feel like we hit it off.

Over the years, I conversations usually started something like this…
(Me, walking into his den while he is sitting in his chair)

Pappy: “Hello, young man”.
Me: “Hello, Sir”.
Pappy: “You know where the drinks are… feel free to go get one”. Me: “Yes sir. Thank you”. (as I walk to the garage to get a Coors Light)

Pappy passed away late this past Friday night. I had a chance to visit with him last Tuesday and I’m glad I did. We were able to share a memory that made us laugh and you know how much I like to laugh.

He was a larger than life type of man who will be missed very much.
