If you do not know me (I mean, really know me) then there is something you need to understand before you read this blog: I value the truth above everything else... except a good laugh. A good laugh will almost always beat the truth as far as I’m concerned. Everything you read on this blog will be true, somewhat true, or something I made up in an effort to get a laugh. Sometimes I will go on a rant that I don’t really mean (or only kind of mean). Sometimes I will mean what I write only to completely change my mind a year, month, or day later. Such is life. By reading this blog you agree not to get offended by anything I write (or, at the very least, you agree not to tell me or anyone else that you are offended). It is worth noting that my employer does not endorse my blog (or even read it, to tell you the truth). The Wife also does not endorse my blog (though she will read it from time to time). I am not paid to write this... it’s just my way of giving back to the community. I have, and will, touch on a wide range of subjects and will give my opinion on these subjects. Again, most of what I say is for laughs but every now and then I will say what I really think and feel (see my views on Westboro Baptist Cult). How will you know when I’m serious and when I’m trying to get a laugh? You’ll know. And if you don’t know, well... maybe this isn’t the best thing for you to be reading. So, sit back, read and enjoy. Baseball and football

So I’m sure all of you sports fans out there have been hearing about the bullpen-gate situation in the World Series game a few nights ago. For any who don’t know, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa went out to make a pitching change and the guy who came to the mound wasn’t the pitcher he was expecting. Many have asked how such a thing could happen. Well, friends, I had the same thing happen to me in an American Legion game many moons ago. I don’t remember the exact year, but I think it was 2005 or 2006. I was 3rd base coach and assistant head coach for Post 147 at the time. The head coach had to miss a game so on this particular night I was running the show. We were playing at Beaufort and we had a pretty good lead. Well, as can happen… before you could spit Beaufort had scored a couple of runs and had guys on base. The thing about coaching at this level is that it isn’t uncommon to have your better pitchers playing in the field on nights when they aren’t pitching. The guy who I planned to bring into relief was playing right field that night. Since I wasn’t expecting to use him until a little later in the game, I hadn’t asked him if he was ready. We did have a young pitcher on the bench (Cook… his Uncle played at USC and is in the Charleston Baseball HOF), so I told him to go get loose. We were in the 1st base dugout and the bullpen was behind the left field wall (across the field for those of you not familiar with the layout of a field). I then sent my assistant coach out to the mound to buy us some time. We were able to get the next batter out, but then Beaufort got a couple more hits. Because of the situation (and who we had coming up in the top of the next inning), I really wanted to bring our right fielder in to pitch. So as I went out to the mound I had my assistant go down the right field line to ask the right fielder if he was ready to pitch. I got the ok sign from the assistant and signaled to him to send the right fielder to the mound. At that moment I turned back around and saw not the starting pitcher (who had already gone to get his other glove so he could go out to right field), but the pitcher I had sent to the bullpen. The following is an excerpt of the conversation we had (I assume it’s a lot like the conversation La Russa had with his pitcher).

Me: “Cookie!? What the hell are you doing out here?”

Cook: “I’m here to pitch, coach!”

Me: “I’m not bringing you in to pitch”.

Cook: “So do I have to go back to the dugout?”

Me: “Yes you have to go back to the dugout”.

Cook (with a goofy little grin on his face): “Are you sure you don’t want me to pitch?”

Me: “Cookie, get the F*#@ off the mound!”

Cook: “Ok, coach. I’m ready if you need me!”

Thank God, the guy I brought in to pitch got us out of the inning and we ended up winning the game. At the time I thought that kind of thing could only happen in American Legion… I’m happy to find out that it could also happen to a hall of fame manager.

I forgot to post this picture from the other night. I would like to tell you things turned out well for Daniel after this picture was taken… I would like to tell you that, but…

The I’m just sayin... Football Predictions

High School
James Island vs. Stratford – With everyone healthy I might pick JI, but as it is now I have to pick Stratford to win this game.

Summerville vs. Beaufort – I’m picking Summerville to win this game.

Ashley Ridge at Goose Creek – I pick Goose Creek to win this game.

Dorman at Byrnes – Hmmm… both of these teams have had some success in recent years and have sent some good players to the college ranks. The game is at Byrnes so I should probably pick them, but what the heck… I’m picking Dorman to win this game.

College
#14South Carolina at Tennessee – 7:15pm (ESPN2) – I know the Revolutionary War Heroes are without Lattimore… but they’ve got other running backs on scholarship. They might not be as good… but they’re still good. This game is at Tennessee which makes me a little nervous, but I’m still picking USC to win this game. I hope Danny and Cory have a safe trip up to the game… good luck getting “Rocky Top” out of your head after the game.

#6Clemson at Georgia Tech – 8:00pm (ABC) - 8-0… but to get to 9-0 these Tigers are going to have to earn it. Will Taj and Company be able to score against Tech’s 3-4 defense? Will the Tigers defense be able to contain the ramblin’ wreck of Georgia Tech’s option attack? I don’t know the answers to these questions… but I can’t wait to find out. I’m going to pick Clemson to win this game. Above all else, I hope Brent and Herbie are calling this game. They are my favorite announcing duo right now.

Navy at Notre Dame – 3:30pm (NBC) – I really want Navy to win this game… but I have no reason to pick them. No reason, that is, except for the fact that I just can’t pick Notre Dame to win. I can’t do it… I just can’t. I’m picking Navy to win this game.

CSU at Gardner-Webb – 1:30pm – I’m picking Gardner-Webb to win this game.

Wyoming at San Diego State – 8:00pm MT (The Mtn, HD) – I’m picking Wyoming to win this game.

Appalachian State vs. Georgia Southern – 3:00pm – I’m picking Appalachian State to win this game.

NFL
Pittsburgh vs. New England – 4:15pm (CBS) – It’s hard to pick against New England, but it’s even harder to pick against the Steelers at home. I’m picking Pittsburgh to win this game.

Miami at New York Giants – 1:00pm (CBS) – I’m picking NY to win this game.

Weekend Update

First, a big thank you goes out to all of you who donated to my memory walk. Because of you, I was able to raise $1,125. My team had 10 members and together we raised a little over $1,400… so as you can tell, I have better friends and family than anyone else on my team. Haha. This is the second straight year I was able to raise more than $1,000. While this $1,125 is down a little from what I was able to raise last year, it’s still the second highest amount I’ve been able to raise for the memory walk. So thank you again for helping me with this.

So, to recap my weekend:

The Wife and I headed to Bethany UMC Friday night for Meg and Stuart’s rehearsal dinner. We almost died on the way there… and by “almost died” I mean we never even got a scratch on us… but only because I am an awesome driver. We were driving down the street when a car pulled out right into me. At least they would have pulled right into me (and by “right into me”, I mean the front of their car would have hit the driver side of my car right in the middle). The only reason that didn’t happen is that I have the reflexes of a NASCAR driver and was able to move out of the way of that car without slowing down (while texting, eating, and changing my clothes… haha, just kidding. I was, however, changing songs on my mp3 player at the time). Anyway, we had a great time at the rehearsal dinner eating bbq and hanging out with our friends Jeremy and Rebecca, Danny (yes, that Danny) and Jen, and Michael and Adrian.

Saturday started with me loading all the kids up into the mini-van and driving down to Patriot’s Pointe for the Memory Walk. Below are some pictures from the event. It was a 3 mile walk and the kids did great. Mary Ruth walked the whole thing with me except for about a 100 yard stretch in the middle (where I carried her on my back). Daniel “walked” it in the front of the stroller and Susie “walked” it in the back of the stroller. Here are the pics:

Must be nice to take a nap during a 3 mile walk

After the walk we hustled back to the house to watch the Clemson game and get ready for Meg’s wedding. What a game.

After The Wife’s dad took Susie and Daniel back to his house, me and Mary Ruth got ready for the wedding. I came thisclose to blogging live during the wedding, but decided against it at the last second. And by “the last second” I mean I had my phone out and was about to log into my virtual office… but thought it wouldn’t set a good example for Mary Ruth. The wedding was nice and everyone said the right things at the right time. After the wedding we dropped Mary Ruth off at the in-laws house and then headed off to the reception. On the way to the reception I got a call from one of The Wife’s sorority sisters. While I can’t remember the last time I spoke to this person, I can’t say this call came as a shock to me. Honestly, ever since 1999 it isn’t uncommon for me to get calls from girls in this sorority. Still, I was driving so I decided to let the caller talk to The Wife. Long story short, we ended up with free tickets to a private box at the Sunday showing of Disney on Ice. But more on that later…

The reception was a blast. The Wife spent most of her time dancing… which was odd since she’s supposed to have a “broken foot”. I’m just sayin… Anyway, there was an open bar and at least one girl there who was dressed like she thought she was going to a college football game, if you know what I mean (at least, that’s what my friend Cory told me). The highlight of the night may have been when my friend KC got to the party. I think I’m right in saying that KC has a tradition of always going to the Clemson/UNC game. I believe this dates back to his freshman year in college (around the same time the ACC became a conference, I think). Anyway, when it was noticed that the wedding was on the same day as the Clemson/UNC, KC proclaimed that he would still be going to the game. LA said he would not be going. I was going to take bets from the other guys in our Sunday School class on whether or not he would go to the game or the wedding… but I couldn’t find anyone who would bet on him going to the game. Well, friends, I may have found a new hero. He went to the game. He then drove all the way back in time for the reception. He received a hero’s welcome from all the men there. I don’t think LA was exactly happy with him… but it was kind of dark so I can’t be 100% sure. I actually have a video of KC entering the reception, but I won’t post it here because my hand was shaking too much (I was worried it might be the last time I’d see KC). All in all, I’d say the reception was a success. A good time was had by all.

We went to Disney on Ice Sunday afternoon. We had a bunch of tickets so we found a handful of people to go with us. I won’t name all of them but I will point out that my friend Ashley was one of them. I also think I need to point out that my friend Clark might have had the best time out of everyone there. It was fun. If you’ve never been to see Disney on Ice, I recommend it. If you go, I recommend you either sit on the front row or in a private box. Below are some pictures and a video from the event.

Prepare to Walk…

Tomorrow is the big day! Me and my three little walkers… well, two walkers and one free loading son who would be walking by now if he took after his daddy are going to be walking to end Alzheimer's tomorrow. We could still use your support!  Thank you to my cousin Louis and his wife and girls for their donation!  There is still time for you to join me in the fight.  So don’t be the one loser out there who didn’t give to my Memory Walk. Give now… give here.

The Wife seems to be butting heads with Mary Ruth and Susie a good bit lately… Boy I can’t wait until the girls are teenagers. The funny thing is Mary Ruth is a lot like The Wife (except that Mary Ruth loves me). Susie is her own person... she doesn't really like our dogs.  I mean, I get not liking Donkey... but Maverick?  Really?  How can anyone not like Maverick?

Speaking of Susie, she had her two year old check up this week. She came in at the 50% percentile in height and weight.

Why do people like scary movies? Isn’t life scary enough?

How is Grey’s Anatomy still on the air? Does anyone besides The Wife and Danny (yes, that Danny) really watch that show?

Why does it seem like bad announcers always get the best gig? I mean, Winthrop’s Men’s Basketball team has a great announcer, but there are a lot of men out there with sweet gigs and they really shouldn’t have them.

Sometimes I think me and Jeremy should be an announcing duo.

Other times I think we should have a sports radio show.

There are a lot of bad sports radio shows out there. We could do better than a lot of guys out there.

I just got done reading Odd Man Out: A Year On The Mound With A Minor League Misfit by Matt McCarthy. It’s about a Yale grad who played minor league baseball. Very good book… interesting and an easy read.

New episodes of NCIS on Tuesday nights and new episodes of Psych on Wednesday nights, College football on Saturdays and NFL on Sundays… what a great time of the TV year for me.

I’ve almost got my Halloween costume ready. One word: Brilliant. Two words: Freakin’ Brilliant.

I would watch political debates if they sounded more like a Ric Flair interview… or if the politicians would talk like The Rock.

Hey, remember when my friend Jenn would post on her blog?

True story, part of the reason I started this blog was so I could publicly give her a hard time for not posting on her blog. It wasn’t THE reason… but it was A reason.

The I’m just sayin... Football Predictions Results

High School
James Island vs. Fort Dorchester – Here we go, a match-up between my Trojans and The Wife’s Patriots. I’m not sure JI is at 100% right now, but I can’t pick against them in this game. I just can’t. So I’m picking James Island to win this game.

Summerville at Ashley Ridge – Normally I would pick Summerville to win this game… but I’ve got a feeling that Ashley Ridge will take this game. I’m picking Ashley Ridge to win this game.

Dorman vs. J.L. Mann – I’m going to pick Dorman to win this game.

College
The Revolutionary War Heroes are off this week.

#8Clemson vs. North Carolina – 12:00pm (ESPN) – Before the season I thought UNC would stink this season. They’re playing a lot better than I thought they would. If this were last season, I’d pick them to win this game. But a lot has changed in Tiger Town since last season… I’m picking Clemson to win this game.

Navy vs. East Carolina - 3:30pm (CBS Sports Network) – Hmm…. I’ve been going back and forth on this one. I was going to pick East Carolina, but I think I’m going to make a last second change here. I’m picking Navy to win this game.

CSU vs. Liberty – 1:30pm (Flames Sports Network) – Are you kidding me? I’m not just picking Liberty to win this game. I’m telling you Liberty will win this game.

Wyoming – Off

Appalachian State vs. Samford – 3:30pm (Appalachian IMG Sports Network) – It’s Homecoming for the Mountaineers… I’m picking Appalachian State to win this game.

NFL
Pittsburgh at Arizona – 4:05pm (CBS) – Just like with the Navy game, I’m going with a last second change on this game. I know the Steelers haven’t been great this season and this is a road game for them, but I’m still picking Pittsburgh to win this game.

Miami vs. Denver – 1:00pm (CBS) – Miami will honor Tim Tebow and his former college teammates at halftime of this game. They will lose to Tim Tebow and his current pro teammates in the first half and second half.

Major Albertus Wright Catlin (US Marine Corps) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on April 22, 1914 during the engagement of Vera Cruz. His citation reads:

For distinguished conduct in battle, engagement of Vera Cruz, 22 April 1914. Eminent and conspicuous in command of his battalion, Maj. Catlin exhibited courage and skill in leading his men through the action of the 22d and in the final occupation of the city.

Colonel Isaac S. Catlin (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on July 30, 1864 in Petersburg, Virginia. His citation reads:

In a heroic effort to rally the disorganized troops was disabled by a severe wound. While being carried from the field he recovered somewhat and bravely started to return to his command, when he received a second wound, which necessitated amputation of his right leg.

Staff Sergeant Jon R. Cavaiani (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on June 4-5, 1971 in the Republic of Vietnam. His citation reads:

S/Sgt. Cavaiani distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 4 and 5 June 1971 while serving as a platoon leader to a security platoon providing security for an isolated radio relay site located within enemy-held territory. On the morning of 4 June 1971, the entire camp came under an intense barrage of enemy small arms, automatic weapons, rocket-propelled grenade and mortar fire from a superior size enemy force. S/Sgt. Cavaiani acted with complete disregard for his personal safety as he repeatedly exposed himself to heavy enemy fire in order to move about the camp's perimeter directing the platoon's fire and rallying the platoon in a desperate fight for survival. S/Sgt. Cavaiani also returned heavy suppressive fire upon the assaulting enemy force during this period with a variety of weapons. When the entire platoon was to be evacuated, S/Sgt. Cavaiani unhesitatingly volunteered to remain on the ground and direct the helicopters into the landing zone. S/Sgt. Cavaiani was able to direct the first 3 helicopters in evacuating a major portion of the platoon. Due to intense increase in enemy fire, S/Sgt. Cavaiani was forced to remain at the camp overnight where he calmly directed the remaining platoon members in strengthening their defenses. On the morning of S June, a heavy ground fog restricted visibility. The superior size enemy force launched a major ground attack in an attempt to completely annihilate the remaining small force. The enemy force advanced in 2 ranks, first firing a heavy volume of small arms automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenade fire while the second rank continuously threw a steady barrage of hand grenades at the beleaguered force. S/Sgt. Cavaiani returned a heavy barrage of small arms and hand grenade fire on the assaulting enemy force but was unable to slow them down. He ordered the remaining platoon members to attempt to escape while he provided them with cover fire. With 1 last courageous exertion, S/Sgt. Cavaiani recovered a machine gun, stood up, completely exposing himself to the heavy enemy fire directed at him, and began firing the machine gun in a sweeping motion along the 2 ranks of advancing enemy soldiers. Through S/Sgt. Cavaiani's valiant efforts with complete disregard for his safety, the majority of the remaining platoon members were able to escape. While inflicting severe losses on the advancing enemy force, S/Sgt. Cavaiani was wounded numerous times. S/Sgt. Cavaiani's conspicuous gallantry, extraordinary heroism and intrepidity at the risk of his life, above and beyond the call of duty, were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SUSIE!!!!!!!!!

Before we get to our post, I would like to remind you that while I’ve reached my goal, that doesn’t mean you can’t still give. There’s still time to join me in my fight against Alzheimer’s. Don’t wait… give now… Give here.

So… guess who has a little two year old girl? That’s right, Me.  Susie turns two years old today. It seems like it was just yesterday that we were in the “hospital” trying to watch a little NFL football and have a baby. Then again, it pretty much was yesterday that we were in the “hospital” having Daniel, so maybe that’s what I’m thinking about. Anyway, Susie is a great little girl and I’m the luckiest guy in the world to have her.

She had her birthday party this past Sunday. I would like to thank all of you who were able to make it. I understand that some people were unable to make it. My friend Danny (yes, that Danny) told me he was going to be there… but he wasn’t there. The Wife wanted me to give him a hard time on here about that, but I’m not going to. Why? Because early on at the party Jeremy told me the news that Lattimore is out for the season. It was at that moment that I knew Danny was in a dark room in the fetal position crying about how in a one week period his Revolutionary War Heroes lost his two favorite players (Garcia, for good and Lattimore for the season). I figured he’d be in no position to play with Susie at her party.

It’s too bad he couldn’t make it because he missed seeing The Wife hobble around because apparently, she is unable to walk into that little house by the playground in front of the church without hurting her foot. I, of course, was the perfect husband and brought her “shoe” (the one she got the last time she hurt her foot) to her so she could stay at the party. After the party, her parents took the kids with them so I could take The Wife to our after-hours doctor’s office to get her foot x-rayed. Yep… forget about my plans for the night… I had to sit and listen to her try to explain how she hurt her foot so bad walking up a ramp. Oh, and she also tried to explain how she got a speeding ticket earlier in the day. Honestly, speeding on a Sunday?! You’ve GOT to be kidding me. We ended up being at the doctor’s office for about 3 hours (because they forgot we were there… really, they did). Anyway, here are a couple of pictures from Sunday.

I mean really, we had to go to the doctor for this? Rub a little dirt on it and get back in the party!

Susie taking a break at her party to take a pic with her big sister Mary Ruth and her little brother Daniel.

She LOVES the doggy (Dach) she got from Aunt Yvonne and Uncle George and the baby doll (Mary) she got from Nana and Da.

Brigadier General Frederick W. Castle (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on December 24, 1944 in Germany. His citation reads:

He was air commander and leader of more than 2,000 heavy bombers in a strike against German airfields on 24 December 1944. En route to the target, the failure of 1 engine forced him to relinquish his place at the head of the formation. In order not to endanger friendly troops on the ground below, he refused to jettison his bombs to gain speed maneuverability. His lagging, unescorted aircraft became the target of numerous enemy fighters which ripped the left wing with cannon shells. set the oxygen system afire, and wounded 2 members of the crew. Repeated attacks started fires in 2 engines, leaving the Flying Fortress in imminent danger of exploding. Realizing the hopelessness of the situation, the bail-out order was given. Without regard for his personal safety he gallantly remained alone at the controls to afford all other crewmembers an opportunity to escape. Still another attack exploded gasoline tanks in the right wing, and the bomber plunged earthward. carrying Gen. Castle to his death. His intrepidity and willing sacrifice of his life to save members of the crew were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.

Lieutenant Guy Wilkinson Stuart Castle (US Navy) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on April 21-22, 1914 during engagements of Vera Cruz.. His citation reads:

For distinguished conduct in battle, engagements of Vera Cruz, 21 and 22 April 1914. Eminent and conspicuous in command of his battalion, Lt. Castle was in the fighting of both days, and exhibited courage and skill in leading his men through action. In seizing the customhouse, he encountered for many hours the heaviest and most pernicious concealed fire of the entire day, but his courage and coolness under trying conditions were marked.

Ordinary Seaman John Hugh Catherwood (US Navy) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on September 24, 1911 on the island of Basilan, Philippine Islands. His citation reads:

While attached to the U.S.S. Pampang, Catherwood was one of a shore party moving in to capture Mundang, on the island of Basilan, Philippine Islands, on the morning of 24 September 1911. Advancing with the scout party to reconnoiter a group of nipa huts close to the trail, Catherwood unhesitatingly entered the open area before the huts, where his party was suddenly taken under point-blank fire and charged by approximately 20 enemy Moros coming out from inside the native huts and from other concealed positions. Struck down almost instantly by the outlaws' deadly fire, Catherwood, although unable to rise, rallied to the defense of his leader and fought desperately to beat off the hostile attack. By his valiant effort under fire and in the face of great odds, Catherwood contributed materially toward the destruction and rout of the enemy.

We did it!!!!! (Keep giving!)

Because you people out there are awesome, I have reached (actually passed) my goal for the Memory Walk. After the walk, I will list all donors on here on one post. For now though, I’d like to send a big Thank You to the recent donors. So, THANK YOU to my cousin Deeny, my good friend Jeremy, my sister No-Name Teri and… wait for it… my good friend Danny (yes, that Danny) for their donations to my memory walk.

Interesting story (and true… well, somewhat true… ok, about as true as the last story I told about Danny) about Danny’s donation. During the James Island/Summerville game last Friday night, Danny expressed some doubt about donating to the Memory Walk this year. As you know, Danny has donated every year that I have asked him, so I was not happy to hear this news. So I did the only thing I could think of… I looked him in the eyes (ok, I didn’t do that because we were sitting right next to each other and it would have been very uncomfortable to look him in the eyes)… Anyway, I made Danny a bet. As you know, Danny is a fan of the Revolutionary War Heroes. Not only that, he’s a huge fan of Garcia (he grew up watching Garcia play at USC). Anyway, I’ve been telling Danny all season that Shaw would do a better job playing QB for USC. So, last Friday night I said, “Danny, I’m going to make you a bet. I bet you that Shaw will do such a great job playing QB for USC tomorrow, that the Revolutionary War Heroes will kill Kentucky. Not only that… I bet you he will do such a great job, that USC will kick Garcia off the team before the next game”. Danny agreed to the bet and the rest, as they say, is history.

Yes, I’ve reached my goal but that doesn’t mean you can’t still give. There’s still time to join me in my fight against Alzheimer’s. Don’t wait… give now… Give here.

So things have been real busy and somewhat stressful at work and all week I’ve had a song and a poem stuck in my head. Both of them seem to help get me through the day. I will share them here with you so that they might help you (though the poem might not be helpful to any of you who run your own church or business… though it might).

“My Job” (I’m not sure who wrote it… I’ve seen it a lot of places... and I’m posting this from memory, so I’m not 100% sure this is it exactly, but it’s close enough)

It’s not my job to steer the ship – the horn I’ll never blow,
It’s not my job to say how far the ship’s allowed to go,
It’s not my job to chart the course, I’ll never ring the bell,
But let this damn thing start to sink and see who catches hell!

The song that has been stuck in my head is a classic by Mac Davis… I recommend you sing this first verse (the only one I know) at least once a day:

Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble/ When you’re perfect in every way./ I can’t wait to look in the mirror/ ‘Cause I get better lookin’ each day./ To know me is to love me./ I must be a hell of a man./ Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble/ But I’m doing the best that I can.

The I’m just sayin... Football Predictions

High School
James Island at Goose Creek – My guess is JI’s starting QB will miss this game (like he did the Summerville game). I like JI… I just don’t like their chances at Goose Creek. I’m picking the Gators to win this game.

Summerville vs. Wando – It’s hard to pick against the Godfather… err… Coach McKissick at home. I think Wando could beat the Green Wave, but I’m going to pick Summerville to win this game. I was just too impressed with that running back McKissick brought up from the JV team. That kid was fast (and he didn’t mind contact)…

Ashley Ridge at Beaufort – I’m picking Ashley Ridge to win this game.

Dorman at Mauldin – Sorry Doormats… err… “Cowboys”, I’m picking the Mauldin Mavericks to win this game.

College
#15USC at Mississippi State – 12:21pm (SEC Network) – The Connor Shaw Show will go on the road this Saturday to face Mississippi State. I don’t know if he can do to them what he did to Kentucky, but I think he’ll do enough for USC to win. I’m picking the Revolutionary War Heroes to win this game.

#8Clemson at Maryland – 7:00pm (ESPNU) – The big question here is what uniforms will Maryland wear. They have something like 30 different uniform combinations and so far none of them have been great. Still… the law of averages says they’ll wear something for at least one game that won’t make people say, “Oh wow, that’s ugly”. Word on the street is that Taj will be playing for the Tigers. In years past, this was the kind of game that would trip Clemson up. Something tells me this team might be different. Time will tell… I’m picking Clemson to win this game.

Navy at Rutgers – 2:00pm (ESPN3) – It pains me to say it, but I’m picking Rutgers to win this game.

CSU at VMI – 1:30pm (ESPN3) – CSU will have to win two games in a row before I pick them to win again. So, I’m picking VMI to win this game (just like I told you I would).

Wyoming vs. UNLV – 12:00pm MT (The Mtn. HD) – I’m picking Wyoming to win this game.

Appalachian State at The Citadel – 2:00pm – I still pick Appalachian State to win this game. Sorry again, DG.

NFL
Pittsburgh vs. Jacksonville - 1:00pm (CBS) – After last week, I’m going to pick the Steelers to win this game.

Miami at New York Jets (MNF) – 8:30pm (ESPN) – Could this be the game to get Miami’s season turned around? I doubt it. I’m picking the J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets! to win this game.

Happy Birthday Jane!

I would like to start today by wishing my “cousin” (on the Labor Day side of my family) Jane a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I won’t tell you which birthday this is for Jane… I’ll just tell you that she is older than me but younger than Sonny. Jane has also been helping me raise money for my Memory Walk… so on behalf of everyone at I’m just sayin…, I would like to thank Jane for her support and wish her a happy birthday!

Speaking of the Memory Walk… I’d like to thank my cousin Susan for her donation. As promised, I think higher of her now than I did before she donated. I would also like to thank Sonny and my friend Michael for their donations. They waited for me to send an email before they donated, so I don’t think as highly of them as I do Susan… but I do think higher of them. Word on the street is that one of my loyal readers was going to donate before he read my last post. It seems he took exception to a story that I told that may or may not have been true. I would like to take a second right now to remind this loyal reader that I could have made that story a lot worse for him than I did. Don’t make me prove it. Anyway, the clock is ticking… don’t miss out on your chance to join me in my fight against Alzheimer’s. Give here. By the way, I was able to raise $800 before sending my first email. Not bad, I’d say.

A big thank you to my friend KC over at Our Life for giving me his pass for the game this past Friday night. If you haven’t had a chance, you need to read this post (just make sure you have about 4-5 hours free before you start reading). It has a great shot at taking the #1 spot on my favorite non-I’m just sayin… Top 10 posts. It’s great stuff, so make sure you go over there and read it.

Thank you, also, to my friend Danny (yes, that Danny) and his wife Jen (yes, that Jen) for letting me sit by them. Their seats aren’t quite as good as KC’s, but they are still pretty good. I behaved about as well as could be expected. I knew JI was in trouble when the refs would throw a flag and then run over to Coach McKissick to ask him what he thought they should call. I also had a bad feeling when I found out JI was going to be without their starting QB (who got hurt the previous week). But, the Trojans still put up a good fight. There is no shame in losing to guys in their early 20’s… ;)

Speaking of the Summerville game… it was Homecoming for the Green Wave. I don’t know if they do this for every game or just that game, but they were selling yearbooks from previous years at the game. I’m thinking of seeing if I can get my Mom and my Aunt Yvonne’s old yearbooks and selling them at the next game. Oh, and it seems the dress code for football games is a lot different than when I was in high school. My goodness, if the girls dressed like that at football games when I was in high school, I would have been at every one of them. As it stands now, I’m thisclose to getting season tickets to Summerville and USC football games. If you don’t believe me, just ask my friend Danny… my man gets a new smart phone and next thing you know he’s taking pictures like it was a photo shoot.

Just a couple more thoughts from the game… I’m pretty sure the lights on one side of that football field are lower than on the other side. At least, it felt that way to me. I’m also pretty sure that field was built before Coach McKissick invented the forward pass. If you take half a step out of the back of the end zone on one end of the field, you’ll hit a fence. On the other side you’ll hit a small hill that is at just the right height and angle to break an ankle. I’m not a violent man, but I was ready to punch the PA guy by the end of the game (much like I was ready to punch the USC PA guy after the Navy game). I don’t know if they do this kind of thing at James Island or Navy or Clemson or any other place… but if they do, then I’ll want to punch their PA guys too. What am I talking about? At the USC game after every first down the PA guy would yell, “That’s another Carolina!” and the fans would yell, “First Down!” It was cute the first time, but it got old real fast. It wasn’t any better at the Summerville game… in fact, it was probably worse since at least when I was at the USC game I could pretend it was something that they came up with (and as far as I know, it is).

The I’m just sayin... Football Predictions

High School
James Island at Summerville – Well, I picked JI to win this game and I was WRONG! James Island lost, 0-17.

Know Your Medal of Honor Recipients:

Lieutenant Commander Robert W. Cary (US Navy) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on January 21, 1915 on board the USS San Diego. His citation reads:

For extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession on the occasion of an explosion on board the U.S.S. San Diego, 21 January 1915. Lt. Comdr. Cary (then Ensign), U.S. Navy, an observer on duty in the firerooms of the U.S.S. San Diego, commenced to take the half-hourly readings of the steam pressure at every boiler. He had read the steam and air pressure on No. 2 boiler and was just stepping through the electric watertight door into No. 1 fireroom when the boilers in No. 2 fireroom exploded. Ens. Cary stopped and held open the doors which were being closed electrically from the bridge, and yelled to the men in No. 2 fireroom to escape through these doors, which 3 of them did. Ens. Cary's action undoubtedly saved the lives of these men. He held the doors probably a minute with the escaping steam from the ruptured boilers around him. His example of coolness did much to keep the men in No. 1 fireroom at their posts hauling fires, although 5 boilers in their immediate vicinity had exploded and boilers Nos. 1 and 3 apparently had no water in them and were likely to explode any instant. When these fires were hauled under Nos. 1 and 3 boilers, Ens. Cary directed the men in this fireroom into the bunker, for they well knew the danger of these 2 boilers exploding. During the entire time Ens. Cary was cool and collected and showed an abundance of nerve under the most trying circumstances. His action on this occasion was above and beyond the call of duty.

Corporal Anthony Casamento (US Marine Corps) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on November 1, 1942 on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. His citation reads:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands, in action against the enemy Japanese forces on 1 November 1942. Serving as a leader of a machine gun section, Corporal Casamento directed his unit to advance along a ridge near the Matanikau River where they engaged the enemy. He positioned his section to provide covering fire for two flanking units and to provide direct support for the main force of his company which was behind him. During the course of this engagement, all members of his section were either killed or severely wounded and he himself suffered multiple, grievous wounds. Nonetheless, Corporal Casamento continued to provide critical supporting fire for the attack and in defense of his position. Following the loss of all effective personnel, he set up, loaded, and manned his unit's machine gun. tenaciously holding the enemy forces at bay. Corporal Casamento single-handedly engaged and destroyed one machine gun emplacement to his front and took under fire the other emplacement on the flank. Despite the heat and ferocity of the engagement, he continued to man his weapon and repeatedly repulsed multiple assaults by the enemy forces, thereby protecting the flanks of the adjoining companies and holding his position until the arrival of his main attacking force. Corporal Casamento's courageous fighting spirit, heroic conduct, and unwavering dedication to duty reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

Private David Casey (US Army) received his Medal of Honor for his actions on June 3, 1864 at Cold Harbor, Virginia. His citation reads:

Two color bearers having been shot dead one after the other, the last one far in advance of his regiment and close to the enemy's line, this soldier rushed forward, and, under a galling fire, after removing the dead body of the bearer therefrom, secured the flag and returned with it to the Union lines.

Get Ready for a Big Friday!

We’re getting down to crunch time here. There’s only a little time left for you to give to the memory walk. Don’t wait… give now… Give here.

I finally join the freakin’ “i” world and what do you know… Steve Jobs died. Word reached me Wednesday night that the Apple Co-founder had passed away. He helped create a bunch of cool stuff. RIP Steve Jobs.

Hey sports fans… there’s a little known secret about me. I prefer to use plastic cups when I’m at home. Not the red, throw away cups… but the kind of plastic cups that you get at a sporting event. I would rather have small to medium size cups, but large cups are ok too. I tell you this on the off chance that you get one of these “souvenir” type cups the next time you are at a game and decide you don’t want to keep the cup. Don’t throw it away… keep it and give it to me. Who knows, maybe I will say nice things about you on here if you hook me up.

This Friday is a big day… James Island is making the trip up to Summerville for a good old fashioned football game. I’m going to try to make it out there for it. Sure would be nice if I had tickets. If only I had friends who had season tickets… I’m just sayin…

Anyway, back to the game. When these two teams get together, you can throw the record books out. Which is good, because I don’t think the record books would be too kind to my Trojans. I don’t know if James Island has ever beaten Summerville, but I know I haven’t seen it (though to be honest, I haven’t been to many JI/Summerville games). The match-up this season has many storylines. The biggest one is that this is the match-up between James Island’s first year head coach Randy Hilyer and looooooooooooong-time Summerville coach John McKissick. It’s a little known fact to people outside of Summerville that McKissick created football… after he created the Earth and the stars and all that. Let’s just say they think highly of him. And why shouldn’t they, I guess. After all, he did coach their parents and grandparents and great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents and great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents… you get the idea. Something everyone outside of Summerville knows, but nobody within Summerville wants to admit, is that Coach McKissick has been voted the best recruiter in South Carolina for the past sixty years straight (they didn’t start voting on it until 1951). Word on the street is that the only reason Sammy Watkins is at Clemson right now is because McKissick didn’t want him at Summerville this year. One smaller storyline is the fact that this will be a game of grown men against teenage boys. The elementary schools around here have a form that you have to fill out stating where your son will attend high school. All the boys who are slated to attend Summerville High have to take Weightlifting and Football 101 from 12:00 – 2:00pm every day. This may or may not be true… I can’t confirm that at this time.

Did you know that McKissick never used the Shotgun formation until my good friend Danny made the team as a Center? Legend has it that one year at Sertoma after Danny got into the game, the Green Wave had 5 straight false starts by the young Center. McKissick called timeout and had young Danny come over to the sidelines for a chat. While there is no formal record of what was said that fateful night, I believe it went something like this:

Coach: “Son, what seems to be the problem out there?”

Danny (in a wavering, slightly high voice): “Coach, the QB keeps touching me”.

Coach: “Now Danny, that’s how you play the game. The QB puts his hands under the Center”.

Danny: “I know Coach… but he’s got his top hand turned the wrong way! Can’t he just stand a few yards behind me?”

Coach: “Alright, son… I guess that’s probably a good idea”.

This is my last post of the week, so I’ll go ahead and wish my brother-in-law Michael a happy birthday (his birthday is Friday). Happy Birthday Michael!

The I’m just sayin... Football Predictions

High School
James Island at Summerville – TR! OJ! A! N! S! The law of averages says that James Island will win this game at some point… this might as well be the point. I’m picking the Trojans to win this game.

Ashley Ridge at Colleton County – I think Ashley Ridge will win this one.

Dorman vs. Boiling Springs – I think Dorman will win this one.

College
#18USC vs. Kentucky – 12:21pm (SEC Network) – I think the Revolutionary War Heroes will bounce back from their heartbreaking loss to Auburn to win this game. Having said that, I am a little worried about this game after hearing my boy Melvin Ingram is hurt and might miss the game. This kills the idea I had that USC put Ingram at QB and just have either him or Lattimore run the ball. Would that be a high-powered offense? Probably not… but it would be better than what they had out there last week.

#8Clemson vs. Boston College – 3:00pm (Raycom) – This is the kind of game that would trip Clemson up in the past, but I think this year could be different. I’m going to pick the Tigers to win this one at home.

Navy vs. Southern Miss – 3:30pm (CBS Sports Network) – I pick Navy to win.

CSU at VMI – 1:30pm (ESPN3) – CSU will have to win two games in a row before I pick them to win again. So, I’m picking VMI to win this game.

Wyoming at Utah State – 6:00pm MT – This will be a tough game on the road for the Cowboys. I think Utah State will win this in a close game.

Appalachian State at The Citadel – 2:00pm – I pick Appalachian State to win this game. Sorry, DG.

NFL
Pittsburgh vs. Tennessee - 1:00pm (CBS) – The Steelers are hurting right now… and I’m hurting because I’m picking Tennessee to win this game.

Miami – Bye.
